This is what a lesbian immigrant looks like

Tell us more about your photo by sharing a brief artist statement or answering this prompt: "This is what being ______ means to me..."

Being a lesbian immigrant means never feeling fully safe, even in my own home. Sitting half-naked under my desk, I retreat into a space that should offer comfort but instead feels like a hiding place. Above me, a rainbow flag hangs—not just as a symbol of pride, but as a quiet reminder of the freedom I long for and the fear that keeps me small. The contrast between exposure and concealment reflects the reality of living with the constant threat of displacement. My body exists in this in-between, vulnerable yet refusing to disappear.

Describe your photo so we can provide alt-text for future visitors to this website. Example: "Two women holding hands and smiling as they walk in a pride parade, surrounded by rainbow flags and a vibrant crowd celebrating LGBTQ+ pride."

A young queer woman sits curled up under her desk in a dimly lit room, hugging her knees to her chest. She is half-naked. Above the desk, a rainbow flag hangs.
